Echoes: a biography [of Robert Blair Campbell (1789-1862)]

Biography of Robert Blair Campbell, with anecdotes of student life at South Carolina College for the Class of 1809; military service during War of 1812; his political career as a member of the S.C. State Senate (1821-1823 and 1830) and as a U.S. Representative (1823-1825 and 1834-1837); his relocation to Lowndes County, Alabama, ca. 1840, and his subsequent diplomatic career in Texas prior to statehood, and as U.S. Consul in Havana, Cuba (1842-1850) and London, England (1854-1861). Includes a few anecdotes re his 1842 appointment as consul at Havana, Cuba, where he served until 1850, where he survived an assassination attempt and entertained entertainer Tom Thumb, of circus fame, after which he moved to San Antonio, Texas, in 1853, upon his appointed as a commissioner for the United States to aid in settlement of the disputed boundary line between Texas and Mexico; later appointed consul at London, England, where he served from 1854 until resigning 1861 with the outbreak of the Civil War. Campbell moved to Ealing Borough of London, England, where he died July 12, 1862. He was interred in the crypt of Kensington Church.
